We will be studying how weight and stress strengthen or weaken standard fishing line and howl long it takes to break. We chose this project because we both have a strong interest in fishing and it seemed like the obvious solution. It was very entertaining to go through each of the lines and see how much each one could take. We took a lot of time and effort to finish this project, it took many tires until we got the line right and we had to experiment once or twice for each for accuracy.
Our personal opinion on previous references and data about this subject were that they were quite accurate . Many people have done this project before and used the same methods as we did and the same line. We feel that we completed this project with our own accuracy, not others however. We feel that his experiment was very beneficial to us for future reference as well.
How can weight and Stress Strengthen or weaken Standard fishing line and how long it takes to break?
My goal was to determine if the five top-selling brands of 10lb. fishing line were all the same strength. I hypothesized that each brand would have there own strength based for weight tests-static, knotted, shock, and abrasion.
We chose it as our project because we both love to fish and knew that we would enjoy the experiment.

Monofilament is the best known fishing line for being around for over 50 years, and all it is is nylon string. It's the most popular line. The chemicals in the mixes can control the limpness strength, toughness, and other features. The more expensive the better quality it would have rather than walmart brands. But yet the line stretches. Its good by it makes the line more forgiving when a fish makes a strong run but it makes it harder to set the hook. It's your best choice of line when just general fishing for nothing in particular It has very low memory but that makes it easier to cast and handle. The bad things about the line is that it looses strength but absorbing water and it loses the strength over a time period.
MYTH: All fluorocarbons have weak knots.
FACT: Originally, knot strength was the weakest part of fluorocarbon. With our technology, Seaguar’s knot strength is not a factor.
MYTH: If fluorocarbon is nicked, it will shine brightly.
FACT: No. As long as it is 100% fluorocarbon, the refractive index will remain the same and not light up or shine when nicked or scratched.
MYTH: Fluorocarbon has very little stretch or none at all.
FACT: Yes, fluorocarbon lines and leaders do stretch, but not as much as mono. Line typically has more stretch than leader. All Seaguar lines and leaders provide the optimum amount of shock impact/stretch.
Fluorocarbon has been called one of the pioneers in its area. It's one of the 1st products on the market. It's invisible when in the water. This line is usually stiff and will keep the shape. The only bad thing about it is that it breaks very easy when has tension. Compared to mono fishing line it contains more materials. But it is way more stiffer than monofilament and has way more memory. Line dose not absorb water, it just sinks. The line dose not easily get damaged from the sun or chemicals. One of the bad things about fluorocarbon fishing line is that you have to change it more often when on the spool because the memory of the line will affect the distance the line is then thrown.

Braided line is very limp, has small diameter, no memory at all. If you don't use a nice rod with this line it has been known to cut threw the eyes on the rod. Its very visible in the water and best to use when in dirty , brackish water. Very hard to snap, even when hung up or have a fish on the line. Compared to mono fishing line it doesn't stretch. With the low stretch it lets you set the hook hard when lots of line is out. The only bad thing is since there is no stretch line might pop at weak spots, mainly knots, or at sudden shocks.
The clinch knot is simple and is probably the most popular fishing knot for attaching a line to a lure, hook or swivel. When tied properly the clinch knot is very strong with a breaking strength around 95%.The Clinch knot work well for medium sized lines (6 lb - 30 lb). It is a perfect knot to choose for most lures.
Uses: The Palomar Knot is a simple knot for attaching a line to a hook, or a fly to a leader or tippet. It is regarded as one of the strongest and most reliable fishing knots.
Tying it: After the loop is passed through the eye, an overhand knot is tied with the loop. The loop is then passed over the hook and the knot is tightened down.
Advantages: It is recommended for use with braided lines. With a little practice the Palomar is a knot which can be tied in the dark.
Alternative: This animation shows the loop wrapped against the shaft of the hook. However, most authorities recommend that this loop be pulled off the hook and down against the rest of the knot. The effect is that this leaves the hook free to rotate in the knot.
Disadvantages: When tying this knot, the fly or hook has to pass through the loop which can be awkward and necessitates making the loop large enough.
Uses: The Surgeon's Loop is essentially a Double Overhand Knot. It tied can be tied quickly and easily in the end of a line. It is often used to make a "Loop to Loop" connection or to create a loop which allows the artificial lure or fly to move naturally.
Tying it: It is tied in the same way as the Double Surgeon's Knot.
Alternative: An extra turn can be used to create a Triple Surgeon's Knot. However, this provides minimal additional benefit and does make the knot bulkier.
Advantages: The advantage for this knot is that is reliable, easy to learn, and some sources claim that it retains a high proportion of the rated line strength.
The strength of fishing line is measured in pounds of force to break the line. Many lines always break higher than the pound test the label says. You can test is by tying a type of line so a poundage school and pulling it until the line breaks.
Abrasion resistance is when fishing around objects that could cut your line, or could break your line cause of being frayed. So by rubbing the fishing line on different objects such as wood, metal, and rock you can determine which line is best for conditions.
If you like to fish and you'd rather not be telling the story of "the one that got away," then this is a project for you. What combination of properties makes for the best fishing line? Here are some suggestions for getting started on your background research into fishing line properties: knot strength, abrasion strength, shock strength, tensile strength, limpness, controlled stretch, and desired range of visibility (Dodson, 2006). Choose the properties that you think are most important, and design experiments to test those properties for different types or brands of fishing line. Make sure that you understand how the different properties interact. For example, what are the consequences of low abrasion strength for tensile strength when the line rubs against a hard surface? How much does the type of knot you use matter for line strength? (Crockett, 2005) Does temperature affect line strength? (Valley, 2005)
The original purpose of this experiment was to compare the strength of different
types of fishing line.
The results of the experiment were that the Monofilament was the strongest fishing line I tested. To my surprise the Braided fishing line was the weakest.
The following materials were used for this experiment:
1) Pens & pencils;
2) Colored markers;
brands of 10 lb. fishing line;
4) 16 oz. plastic cup;
5) 15 gal. bucket;
6) 60 lbs. of sand;
7) Light grit sandpaper;
8) Roll of duct tape;
9) Fishing knot book;
10) Line-tie platform;and
11) Books on various fishing knots, & how they are tied.
Five top-selling brands of 10 lb. test fishing line were tested:
1) Yozuri Hybrid;
4) Maxima; and
Each brand of line was tested using four tests:
1) Static tensile strength;
2)Knotted static tensile strength;
3) Shock strength; and
4) Abrasion static tensile strength.
My experiment yielded the following results: Only three of the 10 lb. fishing lines tested, met or exceeded
the manufacturer#s static tensile strength. All five brands varied in strength based on the test-type
performed. In step one (static tensile strength); Fireline was the strongest line testing at 273 oz. The
weakest line was P-Line at 97 oz. In step two (knotted tensile strength); Maxima brand line was the
strongest line testing at 168 oz. The weakest line was P-Line at 57 oz. In step three (abrasion resistance),
Yozuri Hybrid brand line was the strongest line testing at 30 seconds. The weakest line was Fireline at 4
seconds. In step four (shock strength), all five brands tested equal at 1 drop each. Overall, Yozuri Hybrid
and Maxima brand lines rated highest in overall strength. P-Line tested the weakest.
This data demonstrated that fishing line is not the same strength. Weight, knots, abrasion & shock affect
the strength of all fishing lines & tested differently.
Further discussion in this area of study might include the following: 1) Provide test results to the
manufacturers & obtain their test procedure, data collection & analysis. 2) Conduct multiple trials of this
experiment to determine variations & averages. 3) Conduct trials of other test weights from the same
manufacturers, using the same procedures to determine variances or consistency by brand.
4) Determine other test procedure methodologies currently in use through literature research & manufacturer reports.
